Hanukkah (or Chanukah) is a Jewish celebration that occurs in December. Because the holiday typically falls close to Christmas, it is often thought of as the Jewish equivalent.  But the two holidays are completely unrelated.

Hanukkah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with nightly menorah lighting, special prayers, and fried foods.

The Hebrew word Chanukah means “dedication,” and celebrates the rededication of a Holy Temple in Jerusalem after a group of Jewish warriors defeated the occupying mighty Greek armies. When it was time to light the temple’s menorah, there was only enough oil to keep it lit for one day —but miraculously it stayed lit for eight days.

The celebration includes nightly sundown lighting of the Shamus (“helper” candle in the center), the first candle on the first night, two candles on the second, etc.  A prayer is said over the candles and then the family then enjoys its evening meal which likely includes latkes (potato pancakes) and children play a dreidle (spinning top) game for gold foil-covered chocolate coins or “gelt”.
