August 2020 Challenge

Several years ago, I was faced with making a decision that had the potential to change my life significantly. I agonized over that decision for quite some time and it was that struggle that inspired this month’s featured collection, “Choices.” But it seems to me that “Choices” is something particularly relevant today.

Life in general presents us with many choices to make. But in today’s environment, it we are faced with choices even more significant than ever before. So my challenge to you is:

  1. Create a page representing some sort of significant challenge you are currently facing — or have had to face in the past.
  2. If you want to try something fun: incude on your page, your own handwritten (not a handwriting font) text. The words themselves can be anything you want — a quote; personal notes; your signature; anything at all. It doesn’t matter if your words are legible, and I promise you no one cares what your handwriting looks like — I hate mine too. This step is optional, but I hope you will give it a go because I’ll give you an extra entry in my coupon drawing if you do!

The point here is to add a personal touch you just can’t do in any other way.  I have a tutorial that shows you how to turn your handwriting into a Photoshop/Elements brush starting with a scan or a photo of your words. Its very easy and you’ll find lots of other uses for the technique I show you.

The Challenge Rules are below — and just a reminder:

  • Your page can be as “arty” as you want – or not arty all.
  • It doesn’t need to be “heavy” or “deep” — unless you wish it to be.

Don’t forget: subscribers to my newsletter receive monthly discount coupons and freebies. Just sayin’.   🙂

My Challenge Page

I have two pages this month!

The top page contains visible handwritten words that have become a sort of a mantra for me. “I may not be able to choose what happends to me, but I can choose how I respond.” Lately, it seems I have to remind myself of those words over and over — especially when it comes to living with COVID-19. In addition, the U.S. itself is facing fundamental issues that we can no longer ignore. Like many of you, the stress of it all is starting to take it toll on me and I am turning to art more and more to work through some of those feelings. Under the background paper is a bunch of my own frustrations, which once expressed, don’t seem quite as burdesome – which in turn allows me to remember I have a choice. BTW, the open-armed woman is one of the silhouettes in my We Are Women set — you’ll want to take a look at it (hint, hint).

The bottom page includes text I had typed (remember typewriters?) in a letter to myself a long time ago. I used the same steps outlined in my tutorial to turn that text into a brush. As you can see, even then, I was thinking about what kind of control I had over my own choices in life.
